How to Store Ammo Long-Term
Keep ammunition reliable for decades — control humidity, temperature, and light, and rotate stock.
The Bottom Line
Modern ammunition is remarkably durable and will last for decades if stored correctly. The enemies are moisture and heat. Keep ammo cool, dry, and dark: sealed military-surplus ammo cans with intact rubber gaskets, plus a few silica-gel desiccant packs to control humidity, are the time-tested solution. Avoid attics, uninsulated garages, and anywhere subject to temperature swings and condensation.
Label cans with caliber, load, and purchase date, and rotate your supply oldest-first so practice ammo gets used before it ages. Keep ammunition stored separately from firearms where required by local law and away from children. Stored this way, FMJ and quality defensive loads alike will stay reliable far longer than most people will ever keep them.
