How firearm transfers work
When you buy a firearm from an out-of-state seller or online retailer, it ships to an FFL near you — not to your door. You go to that dealer, fill out ATF Form 4473, pass a background check, and take it home. Dealers charge a transfer fee (often $20–$50). Call ahead to confirm the fee and that they accept transfers. Data from the ATF's public Federal Firearms Licensee list (updated monthly). Listings reflect licensed premises on file; many smaller FFLs operate by appointment, so always call before visiting.
