+P (Overpressure Ammunition)

Also known as: plus P

Ammunition loaded to higher-than-standard pressure for more velocity and energy — only safe in firearms rated for it.

Ask about +P

+P ('plus P') ammo is loaded to a higher chamber pressure than the standard SAAMI spec for that caliber, producing more velocity and energy. The goal is better terminal performance, especially from short-barreled carry guns. +P+ exists too, but it's an unregulated designation for even hotter loads.

The catch is wear and safety: +P generates more recoil and accelerates wear, and not every firearm is rated for it. Check your gun's manual or markings before shooting +P. Older or compact firearms in particular may not be designed for the extra pressure.
