Buying a defensive shotgun. Should I get a 12 gauge for power or a 20 gauge that is easier to handle?

Both work — pick based on the shooter. The 12 gauge has more payload and the widest load selection, and reduced-recoil buckshot tames it a lot. The 20 gauge kicks meaningfully less, which makes it easier to control and pattern for smaller or recoil-sensitive shooters, and a 20ga load of buck is still devastating across a room. A 20 you shoot confidently beats a 12 you flinch with. Pattern whichever you choose at home distances.
