5.56 vs 223 — can my rifle shoot both?

0

I see 5.56 and .223 used interchangeably. Are they the same, and is it safe to shoot 5.56 in my rifle?

They are dimensionally the same but 5.56 NATO runs at higher pressure than .223 Remington. A rifle chambered in 5.56 (or .223 Wylde) can safely fire both. A rifle marked .223 only should NOT be fed 5.56 — it can spike pressure. Check the stamp on your barrel. Most ARs are 5.56 or Wylde, so they will handle either, but always confirm rather than assume.
