Is a .357 Magnum revolver good for home defense?

Thinking about a 686 for the nightstand. Is a revolver and .357 a smart home-defense choice or outdated?

A .357 revolver is a perfectly good home-defense gun — utterly reliable and simple. Two notes: full-power .357 indoors is extremely loud and bright (consider .38 +P for less flash/recoil and easier follow-ups), and you're limited to 6 rounds. If simplicity is your priority, it's great. If you want capacity and a light/optic, a striker pistol or carbine may suit you better. Either way, add a weapon light.
