Is an LPVO or red dot better for an AR-15?

Building an AR and torn between a red dot and a 1-6 LPVO. What should drive the decision?

It comes down to distance and weight. A red dot is lighter, faster up close, has years of battery life, and is cheaper — ideal for a home-defense or close-range carbine. An LPVO (like a 1-6x) adds magnification to identify and hit targets at distance, at the cost of more weight and money. If everything is inside 50 yards, a dot wins. If you want reach, the LPVO earns its keep. Many split the difference with a dot plus a magnifier.
