Everyone says get a 10/22 first. Beyond plinking, what is a .22 actually good for?

A .22 is the best training tool in shooting — cheap ammo and no recoil means you build fundamentals without flinch. It's also excellent for small-game hunting, pest control, and teaching new/young shooters. A 10/22 specifically has a massive aftermarket so it grows with you. It's not a primary defensive caliber, but as a first rifle and lifelong trainer, nothing beats the value.
