About .45 ACP
The .45 ACP has been an American favorite since John Browning designed it for the 1911 over a century ago. It fires a large, heavy bullet at subsonic velocity, which means a bigger hole and naturally suppressor-friendly ballistics. It has a devoted following among shooters who value its proven track record and the soft, pushing recoil impulse many find more pleasant than the snap of smaller calibers.
The tradeoffs are capacity and cost: .45 pistols hold fewer rounds and the ammo is pricier than 9mm. With modern defensive ammo closing the performance gap, the choice between .45 and 9mm largely comes down to what you shoot best. If you love the 1911 platform or simply prefer the way .45 shoots, it remains an outstanding defensive cartridge.
