Step-by-Step

How to Store Ammo Long-Term

Keep ammunition reliable for years with the right conditions and containers.

  1. 1
    Control humidity

Moisture is the enemy. Store ammo in a cool, dry place and toss desiccant packs in your containers to absorb humidity.

  2. 2
    Use sealed containers

Military-style ammo cans with a good rubber gasket are ideal — airtight, stackable, and rugged. Label by caliber and date.

  3. 3
    Keep it cool and stable

Avoid attics and garages with big temperature swings. A closet interior wall or basement (if dry) is better.

  4. 4
    Rotate your stock

Shoot your oldest ammo first and replace it. Modern, properly stored ammo lasts decades, but rotation keeps everything fresh.

Safety first: always treat every gun as loaded, keep your finger off the trigger until ready, and confirm it's unloaded before any maintenance.
