Step-by-Step
How to Zero a Rifle Scope
Get on paper fast and dial in a solid 50- or 100-yard zero.
- 1Mount level and torque
Level the scope, set proper eye relief, and torque the rings to spec. A loose or canted scope will never hold zero.
- 2Bore sight to get on paper
Pull the bolt and look through the bore at the target, then adjust the scope to roughly match — or use a bore sighter. This saves ammo.
- 3Fire a 3-shot group
From a stable rest at your zero distance, fire three careful shots. Aim at the same point each time — you're reading the group, not a single shot.
- 4Adjust to the group center
Measure from the group center to the bullseye and dial the turrets (remember MOA vs MIL and clicks per inch at your distance).
- 5Confirm
Fire another group to confirm. Repeat until centered, then note your zero and load.
Safety first: always treat every gun as loaded, keep your finger off the trigger until ready, and confirm it's unloaded before any maintenance.
