9mm vs. .45 ACP for Self-Defense
The classic caliber debate, settled by modern ammo — capacity and control versus bullet diameter.
The Short Answer
The 9mm-versus-.45 debate has largely been settled by modern ammunition. Decades ago, .45 ACP's larger bullet offered a real terminal advantage over 9mm ball. Today, premium jacketed hollow points in both calibers meet the same FBI penetration and expansion standards, so the wound-channel difference between a well-chosen 9mm and .45 load is far smaller than tradition suggests. That's why most police agencies and militaries returned to 9mm.
With terminal performance roughly comparable, the practical advantages tilt toward 9mm: higher capacity, softer recoil for faster accurate follow-ups, cheaper practice ammo, and a wider gun selection. .45 still has a devoted following — many love the 1911 platform and the soft, pushing recoil — and it remains an excellent defensive round. The honest answer: shoot whichever you shoot best; for most people new to carry, that's 9mm.
