AR-15 vs. AK-47 for Home Defense
Accuracy and modularity versus rugged simplicity — how the two most popular rifles compare for defense.
The Short Answer
For home defense, the AR-15 has clear advantages over the AK for most people: it's lighter-recoiling and more accurate, far easier to add a red dot, light, and sling, and its 5.56 round tends to over-penetrate interior walls less than the AK's heavier 7.62x39. The AR's ergonomics — a thumb safety and bolt release right where your hand sits — are also faster to run under stress.
The AK's case is rugged reliability and cheaper steel-cased ammo, and 7.62x39 hits a bit harder at close range. But the practical edge for a defensive long gun goes to the AR: better accessory support, softer recoil, and controls suited to fast manipulation indoors. Either works if you train with it, but the AR is the easier gun to set up and shoot well for defense.
