Pump vs. semi-auto for home defense?

0

Setting up a dedicated home-defense shotgun. Is a pump (like an 870 or 500) still the smart pick, or is a quality semi-auto reliable enough now that it is worth the extra cost? Mostly worried about reliability under stress.

A quality pump (870 Police, Mossberg 590) is still the value king and is about as reliable as a tool gets — it will cycle any load you feed it. A good semi-auto (Beretta 1301, Benelli M4) is fantastic and faster on follow-ups, but you pay for it and you must use loads it likes. If budget matters, a pump you train with beats a semi you do not.

Pump for me. One less thing to go wrong, and the sound of racking it is not a deterrent myth I rely on — I just trust the mechanism.
